Into the Wild
Tucked into the waters of Innes Passage, our lodge is surrounded by some of the most dynamic and biodiverse marine environments on the West Coast. Here, nature doesn’t just pass by — it moves through, lingers, and thrives.
Our Location
Sonora Island sits at the convergence of powerful tidal currents and deep, fjord-like channels, creating a marine environment unlike anywhere else. Our position in Innis Pass places us in a narrow, fast-moving stretch of water that behaves more like a river than an ocean. From the deck of the lodge, you’ll watch the tides sweep through in long, muscular pulses, creating swirling boils, back-eddies, and standing waves that shift with the hour.
While Innis Pass itself is swift and dramatic, it opens out into a network of calm, protected inlets and sounds — just minutes from our dock. Once through the pass, the water settles into glassy channels. It’s this rare combination that makes our location so unique.
As deep ocean currents surge through these narrow corridors, they stir up nutrient-rich layers from below, fuelling an incredibly rich and productive marine ecosystem. This natural mixing acts like a magnet, drawing wildlife of all kinds — from the smallest krill to the largest whales.
It’s not uncommon to spot humpbacks feeding just off the point, their wide backs rising slowly before a flick of the fluke disappears beneath the surface. Orcas move through the channels in tight formations, while Dall’s Porpoises and Pacific White-Sided Dolphins trace the wake of passing boats.
A Hotspot for Biodiversity
Closer to shore, sea lions gather on rocky outcrops, barking and splashing while bald eagles keep watch from wind-bent trees. And with the tides come other sightings: black bears picking their way along kelp-strewn beaches, and occasionally, the distant, unmistakable shape of a grizzly moving through the sedge.
It’s a place where land, sea, and sky feel interconnected — where nature is close, constant, and never still. Out here, the wild doesn’t feel far away. It’s part of daily life.
